..."fire burn and cauldron bubble"...

Can’t go camping without a campfire! I learned it’s tough taking photos of a fire! I tried different manual settings, some of the “scene” settings on my camera, and even switched on the flash (a big disaster…see photo #3). Of some fifty photos, I was happy with just two. Click for more detail. Which do you prefer?

  1. I've tried to do this myself with very poor results. I think I like the second one best because of the log, but they are wonderful pictures. Well done!

  2. My vote goes for #2....although #1 & #2 were a close match!

  3. You definitely declare yourself as a WoW Syster with this post, all of the shots are better than anything I have been able to achieve, but I tend towards the last as it reminds me of all those trampled to dust under the stilletoe heels of Tammy's Broom Boots.

  4. It was well worth the many shots. These are great. My attempts have come nowhere close. I like the first one because I don't see the logs - just the dancing flames.

  5. Yes, fire is VERY tough to capture. I like the top photo best because of its emphemeral nature.

  6. Haven't tried photographing a fire, but I kind of like the second one best. Congrats on trying something so hard and getting some results.

  8. I also like both of them. I don't even remember how many I had to take to get my 'flame' shot but it was really A LOT and only a couple of keepers.

  9. My favorite is #2 and it is a very good photo.

  10. Good ones! It's so hard to not blow out the flame and not get a blurry mess. These are great- what were your settings?

  11. Hi, Ellen. I just looked up my settings.

    Top photo: 1/80, f4.5, ISO 400
    Middle photo: 1/300, f4.7, ISO 125

I'm guessing the middle image was one of my scenes, but not sure which one ...

Bottom photo: HA. Just tried a flash. Doesn't work...

  12. I think I like the second one best. The first has the nice texture, but the dark top detracted for me. I liked the horizontal log of the first shot with the rich flames surrounding it.
